I’m a hobby baker from Boston, MA.

My dream is to eat a chocolate chip cookie at every bakery I visit and document them. I’m not trying to find the “best” cookie, they’re all good cookies. I’m trying to describe all of the many variations of chocolate chip cookies that there can be.

Area Four
Chocolate chip cookie

This cookie has brought me around to the joy of mini chocolate chips. Because there are so many chips in this cookie, then end up providing chocolate with every bite and little bits of delightful texture. They meld with the dough in a way that you can never achieve with big chunks. The texture was crisp on the outside, with a good sugar crunch and complex caramelized flavor , but still doughy and chewy in the center.

Who doesn’t love the classics?

For our first episode, @nsmckinnon and @Louisa take a look at that most famous and shareable of baked goods, regardless of breadth, crisp, or chew: the chocolate chip cookie.

Nine Bar Espresso
Chocolate chip cookie (from A&J King)

This is a tasty cookie that’s good for dunking. The well-baked dough would absorb liquid without becoming soggy. And the roasted flavor makes it a good compliment to hot beverages. It’s got small dark chocolate chunks that don’t overwhelm the cookie and a consistent cakey texture throughout.

I was in central square a few days ago, and found a chocolate chip cookie at Paris Baguette.

This one was surprisingly good! It’s got generous, high quality chocolate. The bake nailed the “chewy in the middle, crunchy outside” texture. The only negative is that I can taste something in it that’s either preservatives or oil - just slightly, but enough to know it may not have been made fresh that morning. Still entirely tasty.

What is your favorite adjective for a chocolate chip cookie?

Mike’s Chocolate chip cookie

Mike’s Pastry is a institution and one typically goes there just for the cannoli. So, I wasn’t expecting much from the chocolate chip cookie, but this one delivered. It’s a unique texture for a cookie - so airy and light on the middle that it resembles a cake with chocolate chips sprinkled throughout and the outside is crispy. This cookie works well at soaking up hot liquid like a donut. The small chips ensure that you have chocolate in every bite!

Found the most intense croissants at Lakon Paris Patisserie (Outside of , not Paris).

The croissants had crisp exteriors and an airy web of buttery goodness leading to tasty fillings. The square croissant (quatrant?) was a novelty, but lost some croissant texture for the shape.

Filled with delicious flavors, these were delightful, but very difficult to eat. Strawberry cream cheese, pistachio mousse, and chocolate cream - mmm! Next time, I probably should bring a knife and fork.

Butterscotch chocolate chip cookie from A&J King Artisan Bakery in

The flavors on this are spot on! The butterscotch shines through with caramel and walnut notes that are emphasized by the flaky salt on top. The sparse chocolate chunks balance well with the dough. The texture of this treat is consistent throughout, reminiscent of an oatmeal cookie, settling between crunchy and chewy. I want this cookie with a beverage that will soak into all of its crevasses.

Forge Baking Co, brown butter chocolate chip cookie

It might be that yesterday was quite warm, but this cookie tasted like it came straight out of the oven - the chocolate was gooey and the cookie dissolved in my mouth. It’s got a good dark chocolate that forms sheets throughout the soft well-baked cookie dough. For being a brown butter cookie, the caramelized flavor was subtle compared to the bittersweet chocolate, making a good balance of flavors.

Stopped by my hometown bakery, Kretchmar’s in , outside of

The tiny chocolate chip cookie is a perfect treat, definitely hits those nostalgic Entemann’s cookie notes, with a thin dough and tasty chocolate chips.
The large cookie is delightful with generous amount of chips and chunks of different cocoa percentages. It’s got that crunchy-on-the-outside, chewy-in-the middle quality. The bottom has some nice caramelization, and there’s chocolate in every bite!

Starting it off right, with a local classic: Lyndell’s Bakery in Somerville, MA

This chocolate chip cookie looks unassuming, but it’s a crispy treat! It’s rare to find a cookie that is crispy all the way through, and this one delivers that crisp: from the thin golden-brown edges to the crunchy tasty middle. The chocolate chips are small pieces that don’t get in the way of the crunchy, thin texture. I want this cookie when I’m in the mood for a crisp biscuit with tea.
