My first Hellebore to flower, Helleborus 'Painted Bunting', in the snow.
It's not yet fully open, but you can appreciate the lovely pink veins running through the petals.
Snowy #Florespondence
Despite snowing since this morning, the colour from my beloved Acer Sango-Kaku (Coral-bark Maple) still sneaks through :)
If you want an Acer that looks good all year round, this is the one.
A new plant friend for the bathroom. This is a maidenhair fern, Adiantum raddianum 'Fritz Luthi'
Acer Sango-Kaku, shining a light in the garden in the depths of winter.
Happy winter/summer solstice!
The flower is from mid-summer, and is a reminder that the light will always return.
The flower is: Trollius chinensis 'Golden Queen'

Voilà Violas!
By good fortune, whether from wind or birds, these violas self-seeded in my garden. As if to say, Voilà!

Forgot to share a photo of the front garden in the snow. It was feeling mightily miffed I forgot, so it now gets it's own toot.
I rather like the waviness of the snow on the grasses.
First snow of the season.
It's wet snow and we don't think it will settle for long before melting. But the back garden looks pretty in it.
Schlumbergera, the xmas cactus, now flowering inside.
We now have Plant Mage emojis!
Thanks so much to @moiety for creating these for me.

Not everything is about instant gratification - sometimes you have to play the long game - new blogpost https://www.gwenfarsgarden.info/2020/11/acer-griseum-playing-the-long-game.html
Mission #Garlic planting achived! The last 4 cultivars planted: Persian Star, Susan Delafield, Martin's Heirloom and Rosewood. About 80 cloves sown all up.
I'm completely wiped out now, but so happy to have the garlic planted. Woo!

My first Hellebore flowering of the season: Helleborus x hybridus 'Double Ellen Red'.
Now is the time to cut off the foliage of your Hellebores (also known as Xmas Rose). The key reason for doing this, is that it allows you to see their nodding flowers, which are otherwise often hidden from view! It doesn't harm the plant to do this, it will just send up new foliage next season. Cut them down as in the second photograph.
I am so excited I can barely contain myself. My first ever Saffron, Crocus sativus, has flowered!
Short blogpost with all the pics https://www.gwenfarsgarden.info/2020/10/saffron-my-first-ever-saffron-harvest.html.

The garden is getting it's Autumn colours on. Acer Sango Kaku gets better every year, and today is looking like it's on fire. It really lights up a grey day.
The leaves are starting to turn on Acer Sango-Kaku (the coral bark maple).

The 3 flowers are: yellow is Rudbeckia fulgida var sullivantii 'Goldsturm', purple is Verbena bonariensis, and the taller faded-yellow are some flowers from the grass Stipa gigantica
Bumble bee on Verbena bonariensis.
This is an excellent plant for pollinators, and if you leave the seedy heads into winter, you often get Goldfinches coming to feast on them.

My favourite blue Salvia, S. guaranitica 'Blue Enigma'. It's such a dreamy cerulean blue.
It's a tender perennial in the UK (it comes from Mexico I believe) so only survives down to c. 1 degree. I grow it in pots and keep it in the garage in winter.
