We moved into the new house yesterday. After 8 years I'm officially living with my partner. Do you think we're moving too quickly?

"The world isn't fair" should be a challenge to make it better, not a stick to beat people with.

Seems like nobody is thrilled at the #nhm's new director. They claim they're for diversity but the white men who run it keep hiring other white men. The museum keeps modelling itself on brainless soulless corporations and I don't think that's compatible with their values. Certainly decolonisation is not going to be on their radar beyond lip service. I wonder what it would take for him to step down and be replaced with someone more appropriate.

Makes me think of Sara Ahmed: "If you are not white, not male, not cis, not able-bodied, you are more likely to end up on diversity and equality committees. The more nots you have, the more committees you might end up on. Not being not can mean being less likely to end up doing this kind of work. Given that diversity work is typically less valued by organisations, then not being not can mean having more time to do more-valued work."

You think kindness is so revolutionary? Take a course on burn out prevention. Learn to be a street medic. Learn psychological first aid.
People under violent attack from the system aren’t going to be magically saved by a cup of tea and a smile. Your kindness isn’t powerful at all if you don’t actually learn how to do care work.

Drop the respectability politics, drop the superiority complex, and actually get to work.

New bird for you today, a Nankeen Night Heron, found snoozing in a tree near the lakes at UQ. Pictured here slightly startled from the shutter sound. (clearly a light sleeper).

The End of Policing

“The police do not prevent crime. This is one of the best kept secrets of modern life. Experts know it, the police know it, but the public does not know it. Yet the police pretend that they are society’s best defense against crime and continually argue that if they are given more resources, especially personnel, they will be able to protect communities against crime. This is a myth.” Quote from David Bayley, veteran police scholar
