What if instead of paid advertisements on social/digital media websites, the authors and artists curated lists of the products they actually like/brought them inspiration/joy; which were affiliate links?

And what if instead of 90% of the revenue generated by the links going to the advertising exchanges; it went back to the artists and creatives?

“Power loves ambiguity. It loves receiving and demanding the benefit of the doubt, because it almost always benefits whenever there is doubt... Power greatly prefers conversations about intent to conversations about outcomes and consequences, and it loves both euphemisms and the kind of “fairness” that pretends that historical facts and real-world power imbalances don’t exist, or if they exist, they probably don’t apply here”

Tales From The Dork Web 24 looks at the heirloom computer, a family computer made from recycled parts with a 100 year lifespan.

My kittens, who don't know that Father Christmas is a real man who breaks into your house to give you Dreamies [other cat treats are available] once a year.

I always forget the name of this artist every year and have to ask my brothers how to find that 8-bit version of Let It Snow. It's my personal tradition that I listen to this at least once before Dec 25

Dear web developers and admins,
please stop embedding Google's hideous #ReCaptcha into your websites. Its algorithm is faulty, forcing regular users to click dozens or even hundreds of fire hydrants, bicycles, or traffic lights each day. It puts a 'suspicious activity' flag on users who won't obey to Google's business model - such as people who don't sign into Chrome, use anonymity VPNs, or use browser extensions to suppress common tracking mechanisms. Enough is enough. Stop it.

This afternoon published version 2.0 of my html template tag library. It now lets you render your templates using an async iterator, good for writing output to a response stream

What's wrong with (modern) computing?

- Computers spy on us all the time
- Computers are insecure, while pretending not to to be.
- Computers enable new modes of rent seeking, further exasperated by shitty patents and worse laws
- Computers/the modern internet encourage behaviors which are bad for our mental health as individuals.
- Computers and the modern internet, in concert with modern capitalism have built a world essentially without public spaces.

You know, all that bullshit.

Very tempted to block all emails from gmail since the only messages I get from that domain these days are spam.

"10 new rules of design: the design industry has been caught up in Eurocentric ideas for too long. We talked to leading experts from MIT, Twitter, and more, who want to help break the spell." a most welcome conversation indeed

I'm running alongside 8 other *amazing* candidates in the #w3c TAG (Technical Architecture Group) election!

I'm excited for the chance to work alongside some of these folks for a better Web.

If you are or know a W3C AC rep, please consider ranking me favourably in your vote.

I want to push for "dystopia avoidance" (empowering individuals and civic society uses of the Web) and my statement is here:

colonialism related to .io domains

If you’re looking for your next domain, maybe consider not using .io as the TLD. The colonial history and status of the British Indian Ocean Territories is… quite terrible.

The UK colonisers forcibly removed the Chagossians from their homeland to create an empty island for a U.S. military base. They still aren’t allowed to return.
